Next time you walk past an Apple Store, pause for a second and ask yourself one thing: how did you ‘walk in’?

You’ll notice you never really performed the action of ‘pushing a door.’ The door is right there, yet you barely register its existence. The flagship stores simply replace the door with an entire sliding glass wall — on a nice day the whole wall opens up, inside and outside becoming one continuous space; even when it’s closed, the transparent floor-to-ceiling glass makes the boundary between ‘walking past’ and ‘walking in’ fade to almost nothing.

My original draft included a line: ‘Apple spent billions of dollars engineering the entrance design.’ This time, I figured I’d pull that line out and cross-examine it first. That number — I can’t find a source for it anywhere. So let me rephrase: the scale of investment Apple has poured into its entrances, the depth of care, is visible to the naked eye; as for the precise figure of ‘billions’ — I can only say, doubtful.

Reframe the angle

Don’t rush to marvel at ‘Apple has deep pockets.’ What you should look at is: what, exactly, did they spend all that effort erasing? The answer — that half-second of hesitation right before you push the door.

One: every door is a psychological checkpoint

In retail design there’s a concept called Threshold Resistance. Every door is, essentially, running you through a checkpoint in your head:

  • Push door — ‘if I push my way in, will people stare at me?’
  • Pull door — ‘is it expensive inside? won’t it be awkward if I go in and don’t buy anything?’
  • Revolving door — ‘dressed like this, can I even get in?’

Apple’s approach is brutally simple: make the door ‘invisible.’ No resistance, no hesitation. Walking into an Apple Store feels more like walking into a public square than walking into a store.

Honest caveat: Threshold Resistance as a concept is common knowledge in the retail design field; but when it comes to ‘what percentage of foot traffic a single door blocks,’ there’s no unified data. I’m talking direction, not some precise ratio.

Two: the glass facade is one giant storefront window

Seen from outside, the fully transparent glass facade turns the entire store into a giant display window.

Every wooden table inside is angled toward the street; the product screens are brightness-tuned so you can read their content from across the road; the lighting is designed to keep the interior slightly brighter than the exterior, creating a visual drop that sucks your gaze in.

You think you’re looking at the phone? Flip it around — the phone is ‘looking’ at you, using its brightness to hook you and pull you across.

The places where this ‘blurred inside-outside boundary’ gets pushed to its extreme are those architectural-landmark stores: the underground glass cube on Fifth Avenue in New York, the glass sphere floating on the water at Marina Bay in Singapore, the entire glass wall in Chicago that can lift straight up. Their common thread: let the building itself become the brand’s biggest advertisement.

Three: the spatial gradient — from ‘touch whatever’ to ‘deep service’

Notice how the space inside an Apple Store is laid out:

  • Front zone — product display. Touch whatever, no pressure. Even if you only ducked in for the AC, nobody stops you.
  • Middle zone — accessories. Things start to feel a bit more like spending.
  • Back zone — the Genius Bar. Deep service, high trust.

This gradient from front to back, from ‘low pressure’ to ‘high trust,’ is designed. A passerby just killing time can walk in zero-pressure and poke at things; someone who genuinely needs a problem solved will walk all the way to the back — and by the time they get there, they’ve accumulated enough trust in the brand along the way.

No salesperson pounces on you the moment you walk in. That ‘not pouncing’ is itself part of the design.

One open space is actually answering four people’s demands

Customer
I just want to browse, don’t pressure me. → Front zone fully open, nobody stops you.
Product
How do I get you to touch and feel me? → Placed on the most visible, best-lit tables.
Service
How do I approach you without you resisting? → Hide the deep service in the deepest corner.
Brand
How do I make one visit memorable? → Let the building itself become the backdrop you want to photograph.

I brought this logic back to digital products

The Apple Store is the best example in physical space of ‘zero-friction entry + gradual trust.’ People who build digital products can steal three moves from it:

  • Cut the ‘push-the-door’ action: Do your sign-up, log-in, and onboarding have unnecessary ‘thresholds’? Before the user has any sense of whether you’re worth it, you make them fill out a pile of fields — that’s the heavy, ugly door of the digital world.
  • Let the product glow on its own: Don’t rely on a manual to convince people. Let the user see, on the very first screen, a lit, working result. Apple doesn’t explain why the screen is bright — it just keeps the screen bright.
  • Design a trust gradient: First let users low-barrier ‘touch’ the value (front zone), then guide them toward a deeper commitment (back zone). Demanding deep authorization upfront is like moving the Genius Bar to the front door — it scares everyone off.

Next time you design an ‘entrance,’ ask yourself three questions

An app’s home page, a landing page, a sign-up flow — they’re all the ‘door’ in your design.

  1. Find the door: How many times does the user have to ‘push’ before they can actually touch your value? Every extra push, another batch of people turns around.
  2. Find the light: Is the first thing the user sees a lit result, or an instruction manual?
  3. Find the trust gradient: Are you letting people ‘experience first, commit later,’ or ‘commit first, then we’ll let you experience’? The former is Apple; the latter is every form you can’t finish filling out.
