Every time you go to IKEA, isn't it the same script — you only meant to grab a mug, and two hours later you walk out five hundred yuan poorer.

I'd written about this before, with a brutal title — 'IKEA's route design makes you walk three times longer.' But rewriting it properly this time, I stared at that 'three times' for a long time and asked myself: where does that number come from?

I couldn't answer.

So this time I want to tell it differently. IKEA's flow really is worth breaking down — it's a classic case study in spatial design. But I want to re-check every number that sounds impressive, one by one — verify what I can, and be honest about what I can't.

Reframe the question

Don't rush to ask 'how is IKEA tricking you.' Ask first: how many of the choices you thought were 'your own decisions' did it actually make on your behalf, using space?

1. The one-way layout — you think you're wandering, but you're on a single track

IKEA's core move is the one-way layout. From the moment you step onto that sloped entrance, the path is basically locked: arrows on the floor point you forward, turning back takes real effort. Every section, you 'have to' pass through.

The origin of this idea is usually traced to an Austrian architect, Victor Gruen. He was the first to imagine fully enclosed, windowless shopping malls that shut out the street and the passage of time — the effect of 'making people forget their original purpose' later got named the Gruen Effect. Gruen was real, and the concept is real.

But a splash of cold water: whether IKEA 'deliberately designed around the Gruen Effect,' or how much 'lostness ratio' this design quantifies to — I've never seen a credible measurement. What the one-way layout actually explains is something much plainer: it maximizes exposure for every product. You make one loop, and nearly everything passes in front of your eyes. No psychology buzzwords needed — this is shelf efficiency.

2. The showrooms aren't selling furniture — they're selling 'a life'

The showrooms you see at IKEA are never random — each one is a complete life scene. A fifteen-square-meter 'bedroom,' fully appointed with bedside lamp, rug, wall art, even the book on the desk chosen for you.

In my original draft I wrote that 'context effects raise your perceived value by over 40%.' This time I checked: I couldn't find a primary experiment that backs that 40% number. So I cut it. But I still believe in the direction — put an object into the scene where it belongs, and your fondness for it genuinely rises. A desk lamp that looks ordinary on its own, placed in a carefully styled bedroom, starts giving off 'I want this life too.'

This trick is worn out in digital products too: don't sell software as a feature list, sell 'the you that uses it.' A SaaS landing page doesn't show you a pile of buttons — it shows you a clean, tidy screenshot of a workbench, as if every problem had already been solved. The exact same logic.

3. The 1-yuan ice cream — Kahneman's 'peak-end rule'

Right when you're about to fall apart, you run into IKEA's 1-yuan soft-serve and its few-yuan hot dogs. This isn't IKEA being kind.

This is the peak-end rule. The psychologist Daniel Kahneman found that people's memory of an experience is mostly determined by two points — the peak (the best or worst moment) and the feeling at the end. How long the middle dragged on, how tired you were — those fade the fastest.

Kahneman won the Nobel Prize in economics, and the peak-end rule is one of his most-cited pieces of work — credibility isn't in question. IKEA placing an absurdly cheap ice cream at the finish is essentially engineering a 'pleasant ending' for you — once you're home, you can't recall how many kilometers you walked, only the sweetness in your mouth on the way out.

Honest caveat: the peak-end rule itself is solid research, but claims like 'therefore IKEA makes this much more' or 'everyone is affected by it' are extensions people read into it — not the experiment's own words. Don't mistake a marketing case study for the law itself.

One reminder

The peak-end rule tells you: the last moment a user has with your product disproportionately shapes their overall impression of you. So — don't slack off on checkout, cancellation, and exit flows.

4. The tall, overstuffed self-serve area — 'more' reads as 'cheaper'

Once you finally finish the showrooms and head downstairs to the self-serve area, the shelves are tall enough to crane your neck at, and the same item is stacked in piles all the way to the top.

This is warehouse-style display — deliberately showing the inventory stacked up. Its subtext reads: 'this much, must be cheap.' Costco runs on the exact same logic.

People's judgment of 'a good deal' is heavily influenced by visual density: an overflowing pile subconsciously makes you lower your expectation of the unit price. You can explain this one without any numbers — it's a visual cue that's been verified again and again.

5. The shortcut lane, deliberately inconspicuous

A lot of people don't know this, but IKEA actually has a shortcut lane that skips the showrooms and goes straight to the warehouse and checkout. But its signage is pretty inconspicuous.

Why? Because 'making you accidentally wander through a few more sections' is the goal; 'getting you in and out fast' isn't. This system isn't lying to you — it leaves you an exit the whole way through, it just turns the brightness of that exit way down.

I brought this logic back to digital products

If you build products and you visit IKEA, the thing worth stealing isn't its rugs — it's its understanding of 'path.'

  • Path as display: does your onboarding place each piece of core value along the path a user has to walk? Or does it bury the good stuff three menus deep?
  • Scene-driven presentation: are you selling features, or are you selling 'the scene after they've used it'?
  • Give them a good ending: at the final step of a key task, have you left the user a 'pleasant peak-end'?

But I want to flag a caution for myself too — IKEA is in retail, and retail's ultimate metric is getting you to buy more. If you build a productivity tool, copying 'make them linger longer' is basically a crime. A tool's job is to help people finish quickly and leave quickly, and say something nice about you on the way out. Thoughtlessly porting retail logic into tools is, in my view, the single most common design misuse.

Next time you visit IKEA, give yourself three observations

  1. Count the forks: on the path you're walking, how many exits are there where you 'could actually leave'? Where has IKEA hidden them?
  2. Look at the ending: the last time you paid before walking out — was it that 1-yuan soft-serve, or something you never intended to buy?
  3. Hunt for scenes: of the things you ended up buying, how many were sold to you by 'the life scene in the showroom,' rather than by genuine need?
